Common Failures During Mobile Shelving Moves (and How to Avoid Them)

5 March 2026 ยท 10 min read

Twelve real-world failures we are routinely called in to remediate after a non-specialist relocation. Each one is preventable with the right contractor.

1. Bent tracks

Lifted without the correct lifting bar. Result: carriages bind, system jams.

2. Lost end-stops

Small components misplaced during dismantle. Result: anti-tip non-compliant, PUWER fails.

3. Cross-threaded uprights

Bolts forced rather than aligned. Result: structural integrity reduced.

4. Floor out of level

Destination floor not surveyed. Result: carriages drift in one direction.

5. Wrong torque on shelf clips

Result: shelves lift under heavy load.

6. Brake springs replaced incorrectly

Result: aisle-lock fails to engage.

7. Anti-tip removed during transport, not refitted

PUWER non-conformity.

8. Carriage bearings damaged in transit

Result: rough running, premature wear.

9. Labelling lost

Result: 30% longer reinstall, parts in the wrong location.

10. Hand-wheel ratio incorrect

Result: effort exceeds manufacturer spec.

11. Files re-shelved out of sequence

Result: weeks of finding-rate disruption.

12. No PUWER certificate issued

Result: insurer declines claim if system later fails.

Every one of these is engineered out of our process. Brief us before brief the removal firm.
